Bathing Your Newborn

by: Sarah Veda

Bathing a newborn baby can be a traumatic event for a first time Mom. Newborns can seem so fragile, and wet, slippery ones downright frightening. But, don?t fear; once you get the hang of it, you?ll feel like a pro. Newborns only need to be bathed two or three times a week ? bathing more often can result in dry skin.

First of all, it?s important not to put your newborn in any sort of bathtub until her umbilical cord has fallen off. If your baby is circumcised, you need to wait until this has healed, as well. Until then, give your baby a sponge bath.

When it?s time to put baby in the tabletop tub, give her your undivided attention. Leaving her for even a minute can literally be fatal. Turn the answering machine on and ignore the doorbell. Never run the bath water with the baby in the tub. Fill the tub and check the temperature before you add the baby.

Be prepared for the fact that your baby will not like the bath. There may be a lot of crying, so plan to make it as short as possible. Also, the bath water gets cold to the baby rather quickly; another reason to make it quick. One trick to help keep the water warm is to soak a towel in very warm water and lay it in the bottom of the tub. This keeps the water warmer, provides a nice cushion for baby, and keeps her from slipping around. Keep one hand under her head to support her neck, and keep her from slipping into the tub. Speak to her in soft soothing tones, reassuring her that everything is ok.

Use lukewarm water on your baby?s tender skin, and only soaps and shampoos designed for babies. In fact, during the first few weeks of life, until you?ve determined if your baby has any skin allergies, it might be wise to bathe her using only water, especially on her face. Have a towel and diaper ready to wrap her in immediately when you?re finished, to avoid her getting chilled.

As your baby gets older, bath time will probably become a favorite part of the day for your baby.
Alcohol and Water Injection

by: Greg Guster

Our Promise:

Engine Runup does everything possible to keep its overhead costs down, which is why you will notice our prices are quite lower than the competition. We only advertise in Search Engines. We do not sponsor Forums, since they carry a high price, which would only be passed on to the customer. We rely on 'Word of Mouth' for our advertising, and with a quality product, it has treated us well.

We offer a 1 Year Warranty, that's right, 1 year. Engine Runup's kits and parts are the highest quality versus any competitors out there. There are two main components of any alcohol/water injection system, the pump and the solenoid(s). Our pumps are delivered directly from Shurflo, the best name in pumps worldwide, and our solenoids are custom made for Engine Runup, with a solid Brass base, not a single plastic part, and weighs over a pound. The seals in the solenoid are also compatible with 100% alcohol and gasoline. A checkvalve should never be used in the place of a solenoid. We will always offer a better product for a better price, period.

Stage 1 versus Stage 2 Kits

With each kit, we offer a Stage 1 and a Stage 2 version. The Stage 1 Kits are for the budget oriented, that wants quality and affordability without sacrificing reliability. The Stage 2 Kits have extra options such as a Water Filter and a Nozzle Pressure Sensor with a gauge pod mounted light, which alerts you that the system is working correctly. With just a little more of an investment, you will be able to tell when the injectors are pressurized, showing you the system is working. In the rare case the indicator does not illuminate, then you know something is wrong and you will back off the throttle. Both Stage 1 and Stage 2 Kits are offered with a 100 PSI or 150 PSI pump.

Single versus Dual Stage Kits

Each kit can also be ordered in either a single stage, or a dual stage. The Single Stage Kits are for applications where the boost builds up quickly. The Dual stage Kits allow injectors to activate at different boost levels, which is desirable for turbos that take time to spool up. Another application that a Dual Stage Kit is needed is for high power engines that do a lot of towing, or engines that spend a lot of time at partial boost. Diesels are a good example of this, as they produce a lot of boost at various power Stages, and would benefit from water injection at all boost Stages, and not just full boost.

Dual Nozzle Upgrade

When purchasing a kit, you will have the option to add a Dual Nozzle Upgrade. This allows two nozzles instead of one for the Single Stage Kits, or four nozzles instead of two for the Dual Stage Kits. With this upgrade, you will use two smaller injectors, in the place of one large one. The smaller Nozzles have a smaller water droplet size (measured in microns) versus a larger nozzle. So instead of one 4 gph injector, this upgrade allows you to run two 2 gph injectors. Another advantage of this is you can mount the nozzles apart from each other, allowing better dispersal into the air stream. This is not a mandatory upgrade, but you can see it has its advantages.

Our kits are activated by a pressure switch, or can easily be wired to almost any Stand Alone or Piggy Back engine management system.

All kits are alcohol safe and carry a 1 Year warranty (see disclaimer).

Shipping is normally done the same day if the order is placed before 4:00 pm est. In the case the order is not shipped the same day, it will be shipped the following day.

About The Author

Greg Guster

Owner of High Performance engine add ons.

View their website at: www.store.enginerunup.com

gamble@enginerunup.com

Bathing Your Newborn Baby

by: Michelle Higgins

Your newborn baby is so small and tender that giving him a bath might be a little scary. However, in spite of all your concerns, you will find that bathing the baby will soon be a fun thing for both him and you.

For the first few days, stick to a sponge bath, only wetting the towel in warm water and giving a baby a thorough sponging with it. Once the umbilical cord stump falls off, baby is ready for his foray into water.

Water, Water everywhere

Make sure that the towel, soap, shampoo and sponge are all at hand before you begin.

Fill baby's portable bathtub with not more than 3 inches of water. Check if baby's bath water is just the right temperature (which is a bit warm and not more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit).

Most babies usually cry through their bath for the initial months until they begin to enjoy it.

Immerse your baby slowly into the tub, feet first, and use your left hand to support his neck and head. Let him get a feel of the water and with your free hand, splash the water lightly over his body.

Wet the sponge and use mild baby soap to wash his body. Do not use soap on his face. Wash his scalp with a cloth and clean the corners of his eyes and nose with moistened cotton balls.

There is no need to draw back the foreskin to clean a baby boy's genitals; wash the penis with soap as you would do for any other part of his body.

Use a mild shampoo, squeezing out a little bit on you palm first.

Lift him up from the tub and wrap him in a towel. Once you've dried his hair, work on the rest of his body.

A mild body lotion will make him smell good and feel soft, although it is not necessary to use powder or lotion on babies. Diaper and dress him, and presto! You are done.

If your baby is a bath-hater, it is not necessary to make him go through the ordeal everyday especially in the precrawling stage. Giving him a sponge bath regularly and a bath every other day will keep him clean enough.

Safety comes first

Make sure you follow these safety measures while bathing your baby.

Don't make the mistake of leaving your baby unattended in the bath for even for a second. If the doorbell is ringing or you must answer the phone, carry him with you, wrapped in a towel. Drowning can occur in less than one inch of water within a minute.

Baby's bath water should not be too cold or too warm. Always test the water before you begin.

Wet babies are slippery babies. Take extra care while you hold baby in the bath.

Bathing baby immediately after a meal is not a good idea as it might result in his spitting up.

Never run the water with baby in the bath cause a sudden change of temperature can be dangerous.

Bathing baby only takes a little practice (which you will soon get) before you learn to do it just right for your baby.

About The Author

Michelle Higgins

This article has been provided by ParentingSurvivalGuide.com.

Please visit our web site at http://www.ParentingSurvivalGuide.com to discover more articles.

Copyright 2005 ParentingSurvivalGuide.com, all rights reserved.

This article may be freely republished for noncommercial use as long as the article, including the author information and this reprint policy statement, is republished in its entirety, unedited, and with all links working.

Water Retention

by: Sharon Hopkins

If you think you are too big for your clothes, your face is puffy and looks swollen when you get up in the morning, then you are suffering from water retention. The other symptoms are bloating of the stomach or tightness of the ring in the finger. Your shoes will pinch and all these events will cause you a lot of discomfort. This is called water retention or edema.

Usually, our bodies have the ability to balance the water levels in the body depending on the food that we eat or drink. But at times, this balance tends to go haywire. The leading causes of edema are excessive salt and alcohol intake, long periods of inactivity and monthly hormonal fluctuations or pregnancy in women. A sudden gain in weight or swollen ankles are the only signs of water retention.

The common home remedies for water retention are:

? Go into deep water: Exercising in the swimming pool will be an excellent remedy for curing this problem. This is due to the water pressure forcing out the excess water out of the tissues and into the bladder. It is advised to exercise gently in the pool at the temperature of 80 to 90 degrees F. if you are pregnant, avoid water above 100 degrees.

? Avoid diuretics: Though diuretics are effective for the flushing out of excess water in people with heart, kidney or liver disease, they can also cause rebound edema. Continuous usage will activate the salt and water retaining hormones and when stopped, these hormones are activated and cause water retention.

? Minimize salt intake: Avoid foods high in salt like hotdogs, burgers, pizzas etc. They contain very high salt content and the fluid released will remain in the body till kidneys have a chance to excrete them which is about 24 hours.

? Exercise continuously: Exercise has been shown to reduce water retention by flushing out water and salt through sweating, higher respiration and increased urine flow. If you have been sitting for a long time, walk up and down or climb stairs every hour. You can also try the following exercise: point the toes downward, then raise them up as high as possible which pumps up the calf and foot muscles. You can also raise your hands up overhead.

? Increase fluid intake: Water moves through the kidneys and bladder thus diluting the urine. It becomes easier for the kidneys to flush diluted urine out along with the salt contained in it. Plain water is the best option, since juices, sodas and colas have salt content.

? Sip on the herbal tea: Many herbs are slightly diuretic. Parsley is the best known one. Take two teaspoons of dried leaves for each cup of boiling water and seep for ten minutes. Drink three cups a day.

? Lie down with feet up: Recline with feet up in the raised position. This will allow the fluid collected in the legs to go to the circulatory systems and from there to the kidneys for excretion.

If these tips do not work or if you have heart and kidney problems consult a doctor. You can also consult a doctor if you have a pitting edema where an indentation remains when you press the skin.

About The Author

Sharon Hopkins has been managing a number of natural home remedies websites such as http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com which gives information on home based cure for various ailments.Water retention or edema causes bloating, puffiness and swelling of the ankles.

8 Tips On Open Water Swimming

by: Kevin Koskella

So you're ready to get out there and do some open water swimming to prepare for your next triathlon? Before you go dipping into your local body of water, keep these tips in mind:

1. Never swim alone. For safety purposes, always swim with a group or bring along a friend. Given the unknown elements, a dangerous situation may arise such as fog, currents, boats, etc. where you will be in much better shape with others around.

2. Adjust to cold water. If the water you are training in is cold, below 66 degrees fahrenheit, be prepared. Wetsuits are necessary. Wearing a swim cap and earplugs can help keep your head warm. Get in the water slowly and only get in for 5-20 minutes the first time out, gradually increasing your time in the water with each swim.

4. Upon exit of your cold water swim, drink warm fluids, take off your wetsuit, and dress warmly.

3. On sunny days, apply sunscreen 30 minutes before getting in (especially for those with light skin!).

4. Be careful of the fog. It is easy to get lost in foggy weather and lose sight of the shore.

5. Watch the seaweed. If you are ocean swimming and come across seaweed, stay high in the water and do not kick. The seaweed can wrap around you if your legs are kicking.

6. Never swim in a lightning storm.

7. Open water swimming can cause chaffing. Use petroleum jelly if this is a problem.

8. Goggle color. Use dark lenses on sunny days, blue lenses on cloudy days.

Open water swimming can be challenging, but for many it is FUN and a nice change from "following the black line" at the bottom of the pool. Enjoy, and remember, "when in doubt, get out."

About The Author

Kevin Koskella operates the website www.TriSwimCoach.com, a resource for beginning through intermediate level triathletes looking for help with swimming.
Danger Equals A Water Powered Parachutes Jump In An Extreme Situation

by: John Ewing

A water powered parachute jump is primarily executed in emergency situations only. During this jump, the jumper prepares as he might for any other jump. The real difference between this jump and another is that he lands in the water. Water parachute jumping isn't really something for members of the general public to engage in, as it offers extra dangers that traditional jumping does not. Water parachute jumping must take place in water of appropriate depths. Landing in water that is too shallow can cause spinal cord injuries and drowning. As a result, typically only emergency personnel and members of the armed services complete water parachute jumping.

In order to engage in a water parachute jump, a member of the military must demonstrate his or her swimming ability both in and out of the uniform. Because water parachute jump style emergencies will sometimes take place while crew members are wearing their full uniforms, members often practice in full uniform. Members must also go through training that teaches them how to get out from under the parachute once it has collapsed in the water. As with any fabric, the material used to make parachutes gets quite heavy when wet. Because with a water jump there is the added risk of drowning, military service personnel are trained about how to get rid of the parachute to avoid the serious risk of drowning once they hit the water. Jumpers are also trained in the use of flotation devices, which also reduce the risk of drowning once a jumper lands in the water.

The Florida National Guard trains for a water parachute jump on a regular basis. Because Florida is the regular recipient of tropical storms, hurricanes, and other water disasters, guard members must be ready to make a water parachute jump at all times. They must always wait for training, though, until the water levels in their practice drop zones are just right to avoid the dangers of landing in shallow water. Before any jump, they take a refresher type training course. Then they are loaded into a plane, typically a C-23, and they make their jump. These jumps provide service personnel members with confidence in case they are ever required to make an actual water parachute jump in the line of duty.

About The Author

John Ewing is the author and editor of many articles published at http://www.skydiving-parachuting-guide.com .
Does Creatine Really Help Build Muscle?

by: Craig Rowe

If you are a gym rat or bodybuilder or simply interested in beginning an exercise program you have probably heard a lot about creatine and the muscle miracles it performs. Unfortunately, most people believe that creatine helps build muscle and it does in a way, but probably not the way you are thinking. The best way to describe creatine is to say that it helps the muscles help themselves build muscle. If that is not clear enough, continue reading.

Creatine does exactly what it claims to do and that is to retain water in your muscles. This is the point of creatine and it really is effective at keeping water in the muscles. Now, what happens is when your muscles are retaining water they are in an optimal state for building new muscle. As a result, when you take creatine and water is retained in your muscles then when you weight train you will get more of an effect because your muscles are better capable of building muscle. After this period you may develop more strength and increased endurance as well. So, if you are taking creatine to help you build muscle and you understand what creatine does and how it helps you build muscle then you will not be disappointed. On the other hand, if you are taking creatine and hoping it will simply grow you bodybuilder?s muscles without putting in the work then you are mistaken.

The best thing to do is begin taking creatine and working out with weights on a regular routine or even with a trainer. By taking the creatine your muscles will be poised to grow and get stronger while building endurance. However, keep in mind you have to put in all the hard work and that all creatine does for you is helps your muscles retain water in order to be in a state where building muscle is easier. Over time you will see your muscles growing and should not see any loss of definition because of the retained water in your muscles. Don?t become confused about creatine building big muscles; it just helps your muscles build themselves stronger and better when you put in the work.

About The Author

Craig Rowe

For more muscle building, health and fitness tips, visit http://www.searcharticles.net/health.cfm

Distilled Water Could Increase your Energy and Health

by: Dr Edward Steiner

What makes up 70-80% of our planet? Water. What makes up 70-80% of our body? That's right, water.

Water is the single most important nutrient you will give your body apart from oxygen. Water rejuvenates us and carries vital nutrients all round the body where it's needed. Water picks up all the leftovers, wastes and debris that the cells throw off into the lymph system and transport them out of the body via the channels of elimination.

So when you drink more water it has the double combination of feeding your body and clearing you of all the waste products that were built up in your system.

Your brain needs water, and plenty of it. Without water, your brain will operate worn out, tired and sluggish. Water is the ultimate gift to give yourself to think with clarity. In addition, water acts as a kind of healthy lubricant moistening tissues and joints.

When you drink, you want to avoid tap water. Tap water is more like a dazzling mix of chemicals. It contains fluoride, chlorine, and many others. The amount of chemicals in water will fill up books - it's more like a chemical soup. The evidence that fluoride is poisonous is so overwhelming that it's being pushed to be banned in many countries by action groups.

The thirst mechanism when having been turned off for a prolonged period is often mistaken for hunger. As you drink more water your thirst mechanism will return to its natural state. Not only will you begin to feel thirsty when you need water again, but your appetite will decrease.

This brings us to the next big thing you need to understand about water. If I asked you the difference between inorganic and organic minerals, chances are you couldn't tell me, right? Well let?s briefly explain the difference. It's a simple difference. Organic minerals come from plants; inorganic minerals come from rocks and volcanic sources. Organic minerals can be broken down by the body. Inorganic minerals are not used by the body and are stored until suitable water can come and carry them out. Organic minerals can be broken down by the body, while inorganic cannot. One is derived from natural plant life; one is derived from rocks, filings and small pieces of grit. Which one makes more sense to use?

It?s better to get your plant minerals through the food you eat rather than the inorganic form in water. Bottled water is often taken, tested and found to have bacteria and very often isn't rated much better than tap water.

Do you know the best water to use? The best water to use is the same water you use in your iron. The purest water in the world is distilled water. It's as pure as rainwater should be if our atmosphere wasn?t polluted.

If you haven't yet heard that 70% of the world's population is dehydrated - you will soon, as the UN push to get proper water supply to people in the third world.

The second best method of filtering is a type of filtering called "reverse osmosis". Unfortunately the standard bench top filter isn?t enough.

Most of the nasty contaminants in our water simply don't have a taste. Some people feel it's a case of out of sight out of mind. This may work for things people think, yet when it comes to your body, the life of your children, the health of those you care about and the line between getting cancer and surviving it's far short of acceptable.

The opportunity for energy, for vitality, for a quality of life is only known to a select few who choose to raise their standards and take action to apply what they know. New discoveries are being made all the time as new research comes out of the United States, out of Germany, and out of Australia and other countries. How does this apply to me you may ask? Well, these contaminants can kill you. Is this a reason to get upset? No, it?s simply an action signal to act smarter.

The best bit is when you?re drinking absolutely pure distilled water it is so much easier to drink. It's so easy to refreshingly flood your body with purity that will flush out chemicals, clear out the lymph system and contribute to expelling excess weight in the body. Distilled water is so easy to drink and be absorbed by your body without having to flush out the other nasties first that many people report who were struggling to drink half a litre of water a day, are now drinking 4 litres a day and up, with ease! If you can?t get distilled water, reverse osmosis filtered or table water is the next best option.

Many people in third world countries don't have access to a clean water supply. We in developed countries have currently almost unlimited access to clean water. My suggestion to you is to use it!

About The Author

Dr. Edward Steiner has dedicated over 15 years to understanding nutrition and articulating complex information simply.
A Guide to Handling Lead in Drinking Water

by: George Anderson

Although most modern homes have lead free plumbing installation, there are still millions of houses that have older plumbing and thus increase the chances of higher lead levels in water. In the last two decades, measures taken in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act have greatly diminished lead presence in drinking water. However, some metal water taps, pipes connecting homes to the main street pipe or interior water pipes might still produce such problems. Water that stays in pipes for several hours can get contaminated with lead resulting from corrosion of the pipe itself or of the soldering.

There is no other precise way to eliminate the threat of lead in your drinking water unless you have it tested for its chemical composition. The presence of lead cannot be detected by taste or smell, neither can you see the lead particles, as they are microscopic. Another approach is to ask your water provider what the lead concentration in the water is. If you are connected to a private supplier, they should have such information available. Public water providers also take this problem into account and you can usually get some detailed and accurate answers to your questions. Before calling your provider you might also want to try their website, where such information is usually posted.

The level of risk of drinking water high in lead levels is not high for most people, but it is a factor worth looking at. Elevated lead levels in your blood may lead to several complications, even in a healthy adult. Sick persons and those that are weaker due to age or other conditions may experience bigger problems when drinking lead contaminated water. Infants are at the highest risk, as their small body size might be affected by consuming water with high lead levels. The Environmental Protection Agency declared a level of 15 parts per billion (ppb) as the high limit of lead concentration in drinking water.

If you want to make sure that your water is risk free ask your local provider if the ppb level is below 15. If they answer yes, then you can safely drink water without any fear of increased lead levels. However, if they give you a negative answer, you should ask if the street service pipe has lead in it. If they say that the street pipe is lead free, than your problems might be coming from the pipes in your home. In order to get rid of water with excess lead, try to let cold water run for a few minutes. This ensures that water that has been sitting in pipes will be flushed out. Even if the water street pipe contains lead, the same procedure can be applied. You should always use water for drinking or cooking if it comes form the cold tap, not the hot one. Filtration systems applied directly on tap might also greatly reduce lead levels in the water that comes through your pipes.

About The Author

George Anderson loves old homes and has had to deal with lead in drinking water frequently.
